WHO WE ARE

Nokutenda Disability Foundation Inc. advocates for culturally sensitive mental health services, targeting people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. By recognising cultural and individual differences, we aim to increase social participation and decrease isolation.

Nokutenda aims to challenge and change the misconstrued narrative around mental illness and break the stigma surrounding mental health interventions.

We seek to promote better mental health and wellbeing and to improve awareness of suicide prevention in all Australians, including Indigenous communities, African communities, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

STRATEGIC VISION

Our aim is for an inclusive society responsive to all citizens’ mental health and wellbeing needs. This society would be able to engage all citizens who would in turn contribute effectively to a stable community development with no one left behind.

What we do: We provide year-round support, 24 hours a day.

Our 24/7 online support will pair you with a qualified professional who will listen to your problem in confidence and provide you with professional advice, and/or a referral to an external service if indicated.

Partnering with a diverse range of organisations at community fairs allows us to provide health promotional sessions . These sessions explore a range of issues including but not limited to mental health, stigma, early intervention, medication and lifestyle factors. See MENTAL HEALTH SESSIONS

We work within a framework that includes sensitivities in addressing matters related to suicide and gender-based violence.

Potential benefits

  1. Increased utilization of mental health services by people from African and CALD backgrounds.
  2. Increasing the faith of people from African and CALD backgrounds in mainstream mental health institutions.
  3. A reduction in suicide rates leading towards a zero suicide reality.
  4. Access to training and flexibility for people with mental illnesses, allowing them to continue full-time occupations.
  5. Culturally sensitive mental health service line available at all hours
  6. Increased peer support and peer workers
